Update on Bank of the West $100 Checking Account Promotion

read and submit comments for this post

Bank of the West extended its $100 promotion that I last posted on in August. It's now scheduled to last until 12/11/2009. You can earn $100 by either direct deposit of at least $250 or 10 online bill payments. The promotion details are listed in the bank's promo page at www.bankofthewest.com/neighbor. Refer to my August post for highlights of the important promotion details.

When I called Bank of the West in August, I was told by the CSR that a branch visit would be required to qualify for this promo. However, readers have been told differently. Here was one of the comments in my last post:
I do not live in a state where there is a branch. I applied online and the application was approved. An account number was generated. If you choose to fund the account by mail, like I am, mail the check along with the signature card to the address indicated for the signature card. Don't mail the check to a branch (unless you live in a state where there is a branch.) I called and verified this with a CSR.

Another reader warned of a tricky part of the online application. If you're not careful in the account selection part of the application, the savings account is automatically selected. This savings account which is not necessary for this promotion has a $500 minimum to avoid a monthly fee.

Branches are located throughout the Western and Midwestern states including Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and California. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 3514).

Thanks to the reader who emailed me news of this promotion.

  • Offer available online. Customers in California, Colorado or Nevada can also apply at their nearest branch.

So it seems the offer is available to people out of states where they have branches.

  • They also have branches here in Missouri. I guess I still have to apply online though.

  • I opened this account at a branch in San Jose Ca about 2 months ago. The rep told me the savings account was required because I initially declined it. But she said there was no monthly fee or minimum balance requirement. I did 12 bill payments of $5 each to a total of 4 payees meaning some I paid twice. I received my bonus of $100 at the end of the second statement cycle. Account has to remain open for 6 months. I only have $5 in the savings account and I haven't been charged any fee so far. Now it might be a diferent requirement online..not sure.

  • Yes, I can confirm. I opened a few months back after seeing it on your blog here, and I have already received the $100 bonus. I do not live in a state that has branches and never visited one myself, all online and it worked fine through the bill pay method.

  • Just FYI, Bank of West also offers $100 for new business checking accounts. 18004882265 is their customer service number for details. I do know there is a $5 monthly fee if you don't maintain a certain balance requirement, I believe is $2,000.

  • Ok, I've tried three times to open an account online and each time after answering the identity questions correctly, the system declines me. They must be seeing something on my credit file they don't like (not sure what, I just checked it and there's nothing negative on there). I called them and all they could say was "the system declined you, we don't know anything more". And they won't let people open an account over the phone. Pretty ridiculous their system declines an online application, they can't explain why, and the only remedy is to come into a branch in person. Forget these guys...
