4.78% 9-Month CD, 4.50% 24-Month CD & 5.25% 60-Month CD at Family Horizons CU in Indiana

Update 1/09/09: The special 9-month CD appears to have ended. It's no longer listed on their website. However, their competitive standard CD rates continue to be listed.

Family Horizons Credit Union is offering a special 4.78% APY 9-month certificate. Minimum deposit is $2,500, and new money is required. This special CD is shown on the credit union's front page and in their rate table as of 1/07/09. Also listed in the credit union's rate table are several very competitive regular CD rates which include a 4.50% 24-month CD and a 5.25% 60-month CD. Since the rate table had an October date, I called the credit union and was told these rates are still in effect. They're subject to change at any time.

Membership is open to those who live or work in any of the following Indiana counties: Hancock, Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Morgan, Shelby and parts of Marion. You can also be eligible via select employer groups and via immediate family. Please see their field of membership page for more details. Membership requires a minimum $5 deposit in the savings account.

My last post on this credit union was in August 2007 when it was offering a special 6% 6-month CD.

Branches are located in Indianapolis and Greenfield.

The credit union has some decent ratings for soundness: 4 stars (excellent) at BauerFinancial and 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 9/30/08 data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter #64942).

Thanks to the reader who mentioned this CD special in the finding-the-best-deals post.

  • Many banks and CUs restrict really good CDs to their local area hoping to increase membership and that the new members, being local, will use their various other services.

  • I don't see that 9 month CD on their website anymore....

And to the first commenter, I just read their eligibility list, and it says you're only eligible to join if you live in those counties listed in the blog post. Probably one of those restrictions for credit unions to keep them different from banks.
