Finding The Best Bank Rates and Deals #8

read and submit comments for this post

This post is intended to be a place where readers can share info on the best bank deals or other useful banking news. Your help is much appreciated. Also, I'm including websites that list the best CD and money market rates. This is intended to be a place where you can start your search for the best bank deals.

This is the eighth finding-the-best-deals post. The last one was getting too long.

In your comment, please include the link to the deal. If the deal is not on the bank's website, please include the source of the deal (i.e. a New York Times newspaper ad, a sign at a local bank, etc.)

I'll try my best to post on the deals, and I'll be sure to give you credit. If you want to remain anonymous, simply comment as an anonymous user or email me at bankdeals at gmail dot com.

One tip to see if the deal has already been posted is to use the search box at the top of this page or do a search of my archive page or the monthly archives which are located on the right sidebar.

Bank Deals at this Blog and Elsewhere

With new deals from banks and credit unions constantly popping up, no site has a complete list of all the best deals. Some think Bankrate.com has a complete list, but it fails to list many high rate CDs especially those with odd terms like an 11-month term. Also, it does a poor job at credit union certificates.

Below are lists of the best resources for different categories. I've included mine on top of each category (noted by Bank Deals:). If you find another good source of bank deals, please let me know.

Best Certificate of Deposit Rates

Best Money Market / Savings / Checking Account Rates

  • bankrate only lists a fraction of the banks that bankcd.com and money-rates.com list - i am not sure why they don't keep up

  • iGObanking.com has lowered their savings account rate from 5.00% to 4.90%.

I am disappointed... I had opened their account thinking it was quite comparable to UFB Direct, but now it is 40 basis points lower :(.

  • KeyDirect dropped to 4.95%.

  • Re: Keydirect

However, they are still offering their 10 year CD at 5.75% APY for CDs over $50,000. I haven't found anything even close. I'm hoping that rate will still be available in early January. If you have a 10 year ladder, it's very attractive in this rate environment.

  • I just found out that WaMu opened up its High Yield Savings accounts to people who already have an existing regular (not online) checking account. When the Online savings account opened, you had to open an online checking account as well, but that restriction was dropped. If you already have a WaMu checking account and use online tools, signing up for the high yield savings account takes less than 5 minutes and you can transfer funds immediately.

Two weeks after sending in my application I got rather strange email from somebody (Mike Meyer) clamming to be Assistant Vice President and essentially asking me to *send* my net worth details over *unencrypted email*.

Banking guy could you make a poll if anybody else had same experience.

  • Has anyone had experiences with fisn.com? The best deal currently seems to be a CD with an 8% rate, noncallable for 1 year, possible term of 15 years
    http://www.fisn.com/rates.htm
This appears to be a CD brokerage network, and the FAQ page at
    http://www.fisn.com/faq-cd.htm
says FISN only places CDs with banks that are FDIC insured.

  • LA Financial 5.75% APY* 13-Mo CD w/direct dep & new ckg acct or 13 Mo CD 5.25%APY for $1,000 deposit. CD Michelle 1800 894 1200 Sandra ext 8214 for IRA CD for deposit by mail

*APY= Annual Percentage Yield, APR= Annual Percentage Rate
**$25 minimum deposit to open a Checking Account. $1,000 minimum deposit to the 13-Month Certificates, 50% of deposit must be "new money" not already on deposit with the credit union. The CD will auto renew into a 12-Month CD at the then-current rate for that balance tier. Rates subject to change without notice. Penalty for early withdrawal.

  • To Kate:
I think you should re read that FISN webpage. I believe that 8% CD is CALLABLE.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:14 AM, December 16, 2007

  • I wanted to know what you thought of 8% rate at FISN website. Have you ever dealt with FISN before? Are they legit?

8.00% Interest is paid monthly for
every day the 30Yr Treasury Constant Maturity Swap Rate is greater than the 10Yr Treasury Constant Maturity Swap Rate (Positive Yield Curve). If the 10Yr is greater than the 30Yr on any day (Negative Yield Curve) no interest is accrued for that day. Full 8.00% rate guaranteed for 1st. year.

Please do share your thoughts. Thanks.

By Anonymous Stewman, at 10:20 PM, December 16, 2007

  • I've been told that PenFed's board of directors meets Tuesday and will vote on most of the rates for January. Hopefully, we'll be able to get an idea of January rates late Tuesday or Wednesday. I doubt they'll be 6%+ this time, but let's hope for rates well over 5%.

  • About FISN: Yes, it's callable up to 15 years, but non-callable for a year. 8% for a year is quite good nonetheless. I've never dealt with FISN and also want to make sure it's legit before investing given the $25,000 minimum opening balance! Anyone out there with more info/experiences?

  • Interesting article in today's WSJ re: banks' narrowing interest margins.

    Link -> http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119975513647973481-email.html

    Snip ->

Even though the Federal Reserve has been cutting interest rates, many banks are still offering attractive rates for deposits. A quarterly survey released last week by Citigroup Inc. found that "the competition to raise new deposits" via certificates of deposit and money-market funds "remains intense."

  • I deposit my check on 12/28/07 in my Bank of America my expression banking ACC and received only one day interest in December; Bank o A said because it earns interest only on collected balance. I asked other small banks about this matter; I was told that I should get interest on ledger balance. Even though, APY is same at both banks, I got only one day interest instead of 3 days of interest. I feel very strange. Interest rate on rate sheet or advertisement does not have any standard for these balance indication?

I actually noticed that last time when they said it was 5.22% the actual accounts were showing 5.21%. I guess they must use 2 calculators for calcing the apr from the flat interest rate.

I just got off the phone with "Adam", a CSR at KeyDirect. He said the response to the 10 year - 5.75% APY offer has been very good, and that the group that sets rates will be meeting very soon to adjust rates accordingly (read: look out below).

KeyDirect has a "postmark" rule for deposits, so if you mail a check, the rate and term in effect at the date of the postmark is the rate and term you will receive. This also applies to overnight or express mail (FedEx/UPS/USPS).

If you are funding a trustee-to-trustee transfer of an IRA, their New York IRA center will NOT accept an incoming wire transfer, so use overnight mail. I don't know about ACH, but be advised.

  • Hi Banking Guy!
Patriots Federal Credit Union in Southern California that you reported on December 19 is still offering the "Pot of Gold" new member special certificates. My husband and I opened one each yesterday in the Aliso Viejo office. Fast and easy sign-up. There are three offers...you can choose only one

    7 month/$10,000/5.75%

    9 month/$7500/6.81%

    15 month/$2500/7.88%

Must deposit $25 into savings and $75 into checking. $10 membership fee is waived. You can still bump your rate up .50% with direct deposit.

Thanks again for all your great leads! Laurie:)

  • Although this probably happened at the New Year, I just saw this. ING has cleared all referrals, so that even if you reached the maximum 25 before, you can now refer again. My account says that you can refer up to 50 people ($500), although that may be 25 people for the Savings Account and 25 for the Electric Orange Account (since I have both).

I know that will make some people mad here (since they've slashed CD rates) but I thought it was worth noticing. Bank Deals Guy, I know yours were maxed out before so this might be good for you!

  • Lest I be accused of being a "pimp" for KeyDirect, I assure you I am not. However, I might note that it's hard to find any rates for a "longish" CD ladder above 5%, much less 5.5%. For those of you who are seeking to replace or fill years 7 - 10 (as I recently did), you might check out KeyDirect. Their rates for smallish CDs at shorter terms aren't that great (whose are, these days?), but for a few more bucks at longer terms, hey, it's worth looking at.

    Re: KeyDirect rates

It appears that KeyDirect's website indicates a 20 basis point rate reduction in their 10 year CD, while the drop-down menu does not. I strongly advise you call KeyDirect to confirm their rate before sending that money, and also confirm the "postmark" rule regarding terms and rates.

All in all, given the Fed's action this morning, a 20 basis point reduction would seem a hiccup.

Just my speculation, but KEY (the stock ticker for KeyCorp, KeyBank and KeyDirect's parent), shot up today on speculation of a Bank of America takeover. That might explain why KeyDirect and KeyBank were so boistrous of late in offering such high yields on CDs (ala Countrywide). It does tend to increase the cash on hand in a takeover.

If the speculation pans out, you can expect KeyDirect and KeyBank to slash rates, as Countrywide has. No more need to raise cash and pump up the assets, as it were.

    Just my $.02.

The website quotes only their 'basic' CD rates and does not highlight the add-on feature.

You can actually get considerably higher rates as a 'select' or 'premium' member.

For example, 30 months add-on is 4.4378% APY for select and 4.5940 APY for premium.

Top APY is 4.6982% for 60 months add-on at premium level.

Minimum (without City County credit card) is $10K for select and $30K for premium. Also requires savings and checking accounts, but no service fees or minimums while your CD is open.

  • I just got an e-mail from AmTrust Direct about a $25 bonus for setting up an automated $100 per-month transfer for 3 months using their "Save Up" plan. Odd thing is, the fine print in the e-mail refers to both a $25 and a $50 bonus:

"1Conditions for $25 cash bonus: Minimum automatic deposit totaling $100 each month for three (3) consecutive months using the Amtrust Bank Smart Save-up plan. The $50 cash bonus will be credited to your AmTrust Direct e-Savings or e-MoneyMarket account within 30 days after the closing date for the statement cycle in which you make your third $100 deposit. All requirements for the automated deposit transactions must be completed by May 31, 2008. Certain offers may not be combined. Limit one $50 cash bonus per household."

Looks like you can also sign up for a new account and do the Save Up plan to get the extra $25 (or $50...) bonus. I'm doing this deal either way, since I already transfer at least $100 to my AmTrust account each month anyway.

  • Banking Guy ...

Thanks so much for your excellent service. I've been sending you deals from here in south Florida.

I think readers better grab CD's ASAP. It's a good idea for readers to look for add-on certificates.

The ISM services number that came out this morning was pretty bad. Here's the market reaction:

Traders see a 92 percent chance the Fed will cut its benchmark rate by 50 basis points to 2.50 percent by its March 18 meeting, futures on the Chicago Board of Trade show. The likelihood increased from 68 percent yesterday. The remaining bets are for a 25 basis-point reduction.

  • WTDirect is offering 4.90% on a high yield savings account. Here is a special link I got through Motley Fool site: http://www.wtdirect.com/savings-media245/index.html?promo=WTF3IB&utm_source=IB&utm_campaign=text_Q108&utm_medium=text&utm_extra=dim1/motleyfool

  • larkin, thanks for the info. I just called American Partners Bank to find out more info, and I was informed that this is being cut to 4.00% APY today. Nevertheless, it's still a competitive money market account. I'll do a post on this account this week.

About WTDirect, I believe that links to an old page. The latest WTDirect yield appears to be 4.15% APY. Note the small print on that page states "APY is variable and is effective as of 11/17/2007 and may change at any time."

  • Chase has a $200 bonus for opening a business checking account with a $500 deposit. Since anyone can get a tax ID number for free from the IRS, anyone can have a business and qualify for this account.

It does appear that this offer requires a branch visit.
