Bank Deals Weekly Summary for May 26, 2007

Quick Link for Rates

The next battle in online banking may take place between high yield checking accounts. This week Salem Five Bank launched Salem Five Direct with a high yield no-minimum checking account paying between 5% and 5.30% APY. It also has a 6.10% APY intro rate for balances over $100K for the first 60 days and a $25 bonus for enrolling in direct deposit (see post). HSBC is expected to announce its own high yield checking in June. I've also heard E-LOAN has plans for later this year. With this new Salem Five Direct, I now have two banks offering checking accounts with rates of 5% APY and over for low minimums. (see checking account post). We'll see if this list will grow.

In banking news, Everbank announced that it'll be acquiring most of Netbank. So we may soon see an end to those Netbank bonuses (see post).

There's not much to report on savings accounts this week. FNBO Direct savings account remains the best deal with a yield of 6% APY guaranteed until 9/28/07. For all of my FNBO Direct posts, please see this page.

CD Rates Update

A reader mentioned last week that T-Bills and mortgage rates were up, but CD rates remained unchanged. Well this week there was some upward movement on CD rates at several banks. Most of the rate increases were in the longer terms. CD rates increased at E-LOAN, GMAC Bank, Bank of Internet USA, Countrywide, UFB Direct, ETrade and Netbank. E-LOAN now has a very competitive 12-month CD with a yield of 5.45% APY.

Long term CD rates also increased at Northrop Grumman FCU. The rates range from 5.55% APY for the 24-month term to 5.65% APY for the 60-month term. The 6-month and 12-month rates fell a little but are still very competitive at 5.40% and 5.44% APY. These rates require a $40K minimum. Lower rates are available for smaller balances. This credit union is one of those in which anyone can be eligible to join (see post).

The long term CD rates at Navy FCU continue to be very competitive. Unfortunately, membership eligibility isn't easy and requires a connection with the Navy. See how I was able to join and my experience with Navy FCU in this post.

Local CD Deals

There were a few nice local CD deals this week. I just posted on one in Kentucky that has a yield of 6.12% and a term of 12 months with a $50K cap (see post). There's a 7.15% 5-month special CD with a $25K cap in Georgia (see post).

Two 6% CD deals will be ending next week: One is an 8-month CD at Santa Clara Count FCU (see post) and the other is a 6-month CD at Empower FCU in New York (see post).

It's not quite 6%, but it's close. The Golden 1 Credit Union started a new 8-month CD promotion with yields up to 5.70% APY (see post). This may be a good alternative to Patelco's 5.75% CD (see post) for those in California who prefer a federally insured credit union.

For more local CD deals, refer to my local CD deal section below.

Thanks to all who have helped by leaving comments or sending emails on rate updates. Sorry I can't post on all of your suggestions.

The rates listed below are based on Annual Percentage Yield (APY). No minimum balances are required unless noted. MMA next to the rates indicate a money market account. Most MMAs have check writing and ATM cards. Online savings accounts usually lack both of these. The top lists include banks and credit unions with broad availability and with minimums around $10K or less. Previous weekly summaries are available for May 19th, May 12th, May 5th, Apr 28th, Apr 21st, Apr 14th, Apr 7th and Mar 31st.

  • Wow, thank you so much for the bank deals. I am looking at new rates and CDs and this is very helpful. I might also want to add for non-financial bargains and deals like electronics and apparel, I use http://www.cheapcheapcheap.org (cheapcheapcheap.org).

    Thank you
