ING's Save Up Sale: 4.75% Savings Rate

read and submit comments for this post

ING Direct has just announced its Winter Save Up Sale, and it's better than what I had expected. Here's the link to the details at ING.

New deposits to a new or existing Orange Savings Account from now till April 15, 2006 will earn 4.75% APY. After April 15th, the rate will return to the current APY that's in effect at that time (currently 3.80% APY).

For those who had transferred most everything into EmigrantDirect or HSBC, this will be easy money. Just transfer that back to ING Direct and you'll earn 4.75% on that through April 15th.

For those who had kept the money at ING Direct, you won't get anything extra. You can't withdraw and re-deposit the money to get the 4.75%. The rules say that withdrawals will be subtracted from the amount that will be eligible for the 4.75% rate. This is a good example of the benefits of being a rate chaser. The loyal customers are losing out big time.

ING Direct's $25 referral sign-up bonus plan is still valid. I still have a few more referrals to give. The person joining gets $25 and the referrer gets $10. Just send an email with your first and last name to bankdeals at gmail dot com. I will enter your name into ING Direct's referral page, and it will send you an email with the info to sign up. It requires a deposit of $250.

Please check the institution's website for the latest rates and specials. This post may be out of date. Please check the Bank Deals home page for current rates and specials. Please refer to my About page and this site's disclaimer for more details.

  • I've just used up my last ING Direct referral. HOWEVER, my friend who has helped me a little on this site has many available. So if you send requests to me at [ bankdeals at gmail dot com], I'll forward them to my friend and he'll send you a referral from ING.

  • this looks too good to be true. is it? is there any catches? or needs to be concerned banking guy? i started to open with a $100 in HSBC, but i'll save my money for ING if this is the case.

  • forgot to ask if this is better or paypal savings?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:54 AM, January 19, 2006

  • what if you transferred money out of ING (just by chance) on the 18th? If you move that back in will you get the 4.75 or will that count as a withdrawl since it was so close to the program start?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:14 AM, January 19, 2006

  • this looks too good to be true. is it? is there any catches?

Two important details: 1) It's only a promo rate till April 15th. Then it goes back to a sub-par rate. 2) It's for new deposits only. Besides these details, I don't see a problem. Other places like Paypal MMF may be better for the longterm after this promo is over. But remember, you can always transfer out after the promo and leave the account open with $1.

what if you transferred money out of ING (just by chance) on the 18th?

My guess is that anything transfered out before today (19th) won't be counted as a withdraw for the promo. But I can't say for sure.

  • I'm very delighted as well about Ing's promotion though it is a little unfair towards the loyals. As a "rate chaser" I was among the lucky ones since all my money was moved to HSBC and emigrantdirect. Today, I was trying to link the HSBC account to Ing and emigrantdirect but the HSBC customer rep said that Ing is not allowing any links. That's pretty disappointing, even a little annoying. And you can only link accounts now by mail, both at Ing and emigrantdirect, so you have to have check writing ability with the accounts to be linked. For me, as for many of you, this may mean that you'll lose about a week of interest since one will have to transfer money from HSBC or emigrant to your regular checking account and then to ING. But I suppose that's worth it for 5-digit savings:)

  • By the way, I, too, can still refer folks to ING! If interested in receiving a bonus, please send an e-mail to upnorth56623@hotmail.com, and I'll send you a referral link!

By Anonymous andrea in minnesota, at 3:37 PM, January 19, 2006

  • This is great. I already had money in an ING account, which sucks. But luckily I had some money in my checking which I was going to either put in HSBC or a CD, which I will just dump here for now.

If folks above run out of ing referrals, I'll be glad to send some out as well. Email: wgomes@wam.umd.edu

  • Since I have had ING for many years now, I thought this was going to be a great deal for me, but after strategizing, this is what I come up with. Remember too, ING will reward you if your final total is above zero.

Ex: If I should deposit $300.00 as a start; then eventually withdraw $1200.00 (property tax, ugh), that's a (minus $900) balance. That means I would have to come up with deposit of $901.00 to be rewarded of $1.00 at 4.75%.

If that's the case, I'm not gaining much.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:22 AM, January 20, 2006

  • Yes, if you use your ING savings account as your main savings account, this will likely not be a good deal. It's not really a good deal for ING's loyal customers. Perhaps we should email them requesting a 4.75% rate on their 6-month CD. That way loyal customers could have some comparable reward.

About HSBC, one option to speed transfers is to open a checking account with HSBC. Then you could mail the check to ING or EmigrantDirect to create the link. Transfers between the savings and checking are immediate. There are no minimum balance or direct deposit requirements on the checking. There is an inactivity fee after 90 days.

  • Thanks for the info on virtualbank's CD rates. Those who are able to lock in their money for 6 months, get 4.75% with their CD and don't have to move it out of ING in April.
Also, thanks to Ken (banking guy)for the great idea with opening a ckecking account with HSBC to be able to move money a little faster. I should have thought of that myself!! :)

By Anonymous andrea, at 2:11 PM, January 20, 2006

  • HSBC just increased their rates to 4.80% - and they are not calling it a time-limited sale.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:13 PM, February 02, 2006

  • Another good thing about HSBC's promo is that it's not limited to just new money. Refer to this post for more info.

  • How do you send referrals and how do you find out how many you have?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:37 PM, February 10, 2006

  • About how to send an ING Direct referral, there should be a referral button at the bottom of your account summary page. This page will describe the referral program with information on the numbers allowed and provide a button to initiate the referral. All referrals pending and received show up in a list so you can see how close you're getting to the 25 limit.

  • I still have some ED referral link available.

Let me know if you need one at :

  • hey hey hey, does anyone still have a refer link to ING direct saving account? Let me know, I would really appreciate this. I hope I can still catch the last train to open the saving with that high interest rate. I am being very skeptical about on line banking, have never used it before, because of id theft...........any comments on this, guys?

    Thanks

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:59 AM, April 12, 2006

  • Hey all. Here's some referral links that don't require you to send me your e-mail address:

    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus

It goes direct to ING's site, and as long as you see the info on the bonus up at the top after clicking Open or Continue, it's still valid. If not, post another comment and I'll throw some more links up.

By Anonymous ING Referrer, at 9:52 PM, April 17, 2006

  • Good idea! Refer to this post for more explanation and links for ING Direct referrals without email

By Blogger Banking Guy, at 7:20 AM, April 19, 2006

  • Hey cool -- 2/3 of the $25 referral links I posted two comments ago have been used!

    Here's three more fresh ones:

    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus

Again -- make sure after clicking on "Open account" or "Continue" that the text at the top of the page indicates that you'll be getting the $25 bonus. Otherwise the link is expired, and you should come back here for another one.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:47 PM, April 25, 2006

  • Hey there, all but two of the $25 bonus links I posted above have been used. To make it easier on you, I'll repost all the active ones here, along with some new ones:

    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus
    ING Direct $25 Bonus

Remember, after clicking "Open now!" or "Continue" make sure the page says at the top: "To receive your $25 bonus..."

If it doesn't, the link is expired, and you should come back here and pick another one.

    Thanks, and enjoy the $25!
